Barangay

Readability Center aims to be of assistance in communities where we are present. We had been providing free reading remediation sessions to Quirino Elementary School students. We also had activities with Barangay Quirino 2B’s daycare center.

Aside from teaching children, we also assist the community by giving talks for parents on how to support literacy at home and workshops for the ates and kuyas (the youth) and equip them to be effective reading tutors for young children in the barangay.

Scholarship

In partnership with Quirino Elementary School, we had identified Grade 1 and 2 students to attend a reading remediation program. They are grouped into 4 or 5 to accommodate more students.

During the pandemic, we continued offering the remediation program online. We had children from various public schools, mostly from Baseco Compound in Manila.

Teacher Professional Development

This program focuses on teaching the most effective latest trends in literacy instruction. We share our expertise and the knowledge we have gathered in our practice with fellow literacy educators through face-to-face and online seminars. We partner with Coursebank (www.coursebank.com) and offer online courses even before the pandemic. We have been accredited by the Professional Regulation Commission as a service provider in offering continuing professional development programs since 2017.

Partnerships

The Center also collaborates to promote literacy development among children and their families. We collaborate with allied professionals, schools, government organizations, and non-government organizations to promote and support literacy development. Since June 2022, we have been working with Australian Aid through Education Pathways to Peace Education in Mindanao and in partnership with the Department of Education and the Ministry of Basic, Higher, and Technical Education to develop the Bangsamoro K-3 Assessment Tools on Literacy, Numeracy, and Social-Emotional Learning. Previous engagements were with Children International, Good Neighbors International Philippines, and Save the Children, where we assisted them in improving the reading program for the communities they work with. We also help develop Tanglaw, a computer-assisted reading tutorial software in Filipino, under the Department of Science and Technology and the Electrical and Electronics Institute, College of Engineering of the University of the Philippines.
